A willingness to give your time and energy to something. A dedication to something you believe in.
Commitment is typically not a word that is used lightly. It tends to refer to big things in one’s life. However, when committing to something big, it is very common for people to lose focus or get lost in the emotions of it. The key is staying positive throughout the process.
People who are committed do their very best even outside their comfort zones. They hurdle difficulties to fulfill their commitments not only to others but also to themselves. Because they are focused, their choices in life are clearer. They can see the way towards their goals.
We talk about commitment as going "all in." When you truly to commit to something, you get to reap the full rewards. As we dedicate ourselves, do the work, push through the challenges, and overcome all the obstacles, that journey builds our confidence and sense of self worth. We become an even better version of ourselves.
Taekwondo takes commitment. Of course we like to have fun in all our classes, but to be successful long-term, it takes dedication and effort. Here are some helpful tips for you to consider and implement when you are committing to something big, both in the dojang and in life:
Understand the why of your commitment. It’s important to always keep your end goal at forefront of your mind. In times of struggle or defeat, continue to remind yourself what you are working towards, and how great it will feel inside and out when you achieve it.
Do not compare yourself to others. Levels of commitment can vary from person to person. It’s completely normal for people to achieve things at different paces. Do not be discouraged if your peer has achieved something before you that you are also working toward. Instead, take it as a celebration for your peer, and as motivation for you to get there too.
Take one step at a time. Focus on small improvements over time. When you first start a new skill, maybe you'll suck at it. That's fine! Everyone sucks at the beginning. Focus on getting just a little better, one technique or strategy at a time. Keep coming back because you're committed to improving yourself and learning something new every time you step on the mats.
Committed people will keep moving forward no matter what obstacles are in front of them. They do not quit. They embrace the challenges that each day presents. Each day as you remain committed to your goal, you build a better you!
